HOLD THE RABIES VACCINATION PLEASE
MEDICAL
Thursday 17th of May 2007 04:15:36 AM

There is alot of conflicting information on this subject, but I tend to lean toward the cautious side on this one.

If you have a toy breed puppy, any puppy for that matter, but especially the little ones...............and you are taking them in for their last round of shots. Ask the vet to hold the rabies vaccination until you spay or neuter. There is strong belief that the boosters and the rabies at the same time can have a negative effect on the pup. Alot of times it won't, but if it does and it's your pup, waiting is an easy way to help prevent it.

There is a large array of reactions that can occur if they have one. One pup i saw whined and could only spin in circles......................he never did come out of it.................of course it's probably not going to be pinpointed that the vaccines caused it but if you have a healthy pup and you go get it vaccinated and then you have a problem, and especially a severe one, it's a pretty good sign the vaccines caused it. It's not hard to overload the system of a toy breed pup.

So when you go to the vet, of course you want their advice and care, but you also need to determine in instances what is the best thing for your pup, just like you would your children......................they rely on you in the same way.

HOW SHOULD I CARE FOR MY PUPPY"S TEETH?????

It is recommended that you put your pup under once a year to clean it's teeth.

Here is a good rule of thumb......................

Ask yourself questions..........................

When someone tells you something apply it to yourself............................

Do they put me under to clean my teeth??????

Obviously the answer is "no"

Understandably the person cleaning the teeth does not want to be bitten so it is easier to put the dog under. But is it easier on the dog....................I don't think so. I believe that anesthetic at anytime is a risk.

There are alot of products you can buy now that help with teeth cleaning, there are alot of toys you can buy that help promote clean teeth. There are certain ways to feed your pup that can help with their teeth.

It would seem wise to research all the available options before putting your pup to sleep once a year to clean it's teeth.

IS IT SAFE TO SHIP A PUPPY????
TRACY'S OPINION (NOT ALWAYS RIGHT)

Is it safe to ship a puppy?

This is often a question that is asked me , and this is, notice the category, my opinion and my response.

If the crate the puppy is coming in is prepared properly and the puppy has ample food and water available, and warmth, the pup is going to be just fine.

If a puppy gets sick on the airplane the puppy will get sick in a car, point being the ride in the car is just as hard on a pup...................sometimes harder than the flight on the plane. when they are tucked in their carrier, most the time they take a nap.

The airlines have very stringent rules for handling pups and are inspected on a regular basis. If for some reason there is a delay and the puppy is held in transit they are trained to care for them and have holding places where they are cared for.

Temperature becomes an issue only while getting them to and from the plane. Once on the plane the temperature is controlled and they are kept comfortable.

Most breeders would never ship a pup if they didn't think they would be safe.

So if you have a puppy you would like to purchase but the travel part of it scares you I am writing this to help ease your mind.

Honestly, they will be fine, will get there faster in most cases, and are in their own space while traveling.

Never have I had a problem when i thought the pup was endangered while shipping.

WHAT KIND OF COLLAR SHOULD I GET????
TRAINING

I feel it's best  just for safety not to leave the pup unattended with a collar on. If you only put it on when it's time to go for a walk they quickly learn what it's for and appreciate it.There is a chance they can be hung up in it if noone were home with them. Then there could be a situation that could turn out to be tragic. I recommend the little harnesses where you go over their head and shoulders and the leash clips on in between their shoulder blades. This way if they are on their walk and they get a bit of a jerk at times (alot of times it's because they are just learning and they tend to cause the jerks themselves:) their whole body comes, not just their head, and it's alot easier on their neck.

I happen to have a primadonna yorkie on my lap as writing this and she said be sure to let you know the little fancy pretty collars are totally acceptable when on an outing but please remove them when you get home.
